THE RUNAWAY HUG

By Nick Bland
Illustrated by Freya Blackwood
Published by Scholastic Australia

This book WON the 2012 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year award for the Early Childhood sector.

Reasons we love this book:

1/ It highlights real life!

The book doesn't sugarcoat things - mum does laundry in her undies, there's mess on the floor. I think Freya Blackwood has nailed the setting of a busy family home with 4 kids and a dog just perfectly.

2/ It teaches affection and love with the family before bed.

Even though Lucy's mum is just playing when she says she only has one hug left and Lucy needs to return it, I think it sets a cute scene as she races around giving out hugs till the dog runs away with it. I love that Lucy finds the hug SO important that she just must return it!

3/ It's a beautifully written and illustrated book.

This author and illustrator combo work very well together in capturing the before bedtime madness that can play out! It's a beautifully written story and as usual the illustrations by Freya Blackwood are spot on, soft, gentle and pretty.

For 3 year olds and up. A gorgeous bedtime story if you're looking for a new one!
